When the wood is tough to split I'll put a piece of firewood between the ram and the log being split. That way you can usually complete the split on the first pass and not have to flip or turn to complete it.

Ok mike listen up here please. I am a boilermaker by trade also a past heavy equipment earth moving contractor. I have rigged and tied down thousands of loads in my day. PLEASE PLEASE STOP USING NYLON ON STEEL. I SEE YOU HAVE TIED ONE STRAP BACK TOGETHER ALREADY. YOU WILL LOSE A LOAD FROM RUBBING THROUGH THE NYLON. YOU CAN WELD EYES/lugs onto framework and attach nylon ratchet type with a steel hook! There will be no abrasive wear on your rigging. !! Weld four lugs .. two on each side on each end!!. Hook on or shackle on!! Take your pick!!!. ALL FOR HAULING SAFELY HERE. AND HATS OFF FOR HELPING NEIGHBOR OUT. Shane Ohhh if you use shackes ... TIE WIRE PIN EYES TO STOP BACKING OUT THROUGH VIBRATION!!!

The reason elm is so difficult to split is that the grain does not grow straight up the tree. It twists and turns and one grain does not take the same path as its neighbor grain, therefore they intertwine and interlock. Elm trees give nice shade but they are not a desirable tree for woodworkers and wood splitters.

Maybe the did not teach history in WV when he was in school, but they sure did in my state and I am sure I am older than your friend. In fact, my BA is in history and my love of history was not learned in college and it was not an online degree mill we see, today. It also took me ten years and a war to get through college. I am not gen X or the like. I am a war baby ad you know which war. Those were some heavy looking rounds. I just got through cutting down some two foot hickories for a friend and you do not pick up those 20 inch rounds - you roll them.

I thought I recognized that emblem on the shirt. We were involved with 4H shooting sports for 12 years. Started the program in our area with me as the coach and my son as the only member. Built it up to almost 100 members with the help of some great people. Sent many kids to nationals and brought home a ton of medals. Great organization to introduce kids to the shooting sports. Focus on sportsmanship, safety and discipline with a lot of fun thrown in.

I used to live in a home with a taylor made outdoor wood furnace which was a great furnace. Sadly, I had a 60' fall in the military from a repelling tower. At the time didn't break a bone... age 19. It did cause issues but nothing major. during a operation at a va hospital they had problems. The bone graft they were inserting broke and cut into the S1 nerve root at my spinal cord. So long story short my wood cutting days were done. I can remember watching my wife, brother and brother in law unloading wood near the stove. A neighbor down the road heard about what happened to me. He had about 20 ricks of wood split and piled up. He gave that wood to us for a little of nothing. Without good friends and strong family we would have been in trouble that year. It is always good to help others when you can. You don't know when you will need the help in return.

This does bring back some memories when I used to hunt. We had a hunting club that was way in the woods. And getting to that club we drove past a really really old shack with an old black man that would usually be sitting on a chair on his small from porch. And one day after the hunting season was over, I thought about that old man and how I knew he was only heating his place via wood. And seeing his wood stack on the porch very low, I decided to go cut wood for him to make it through the winter. S my two sons and a friend and I went and cut a truck load of usable sized firewood for him and drove to his place and filled his wood pile with more then enough wood to last him through the cold weather. He was so excited and that was all I needed for that effort. What seems like a small thing to us, makes a huge difference with people that don't have it as well. Never hurts to do something good for folks...

Thanks for providing an entertaining and informative video series. I started watching after researching RK Tractors and found the videos on their website. I recently ordered one and I am awaiting it's delivery. This channel has been providing me with entertainment and information now that I am building a new home on some property adjacent to my son-in-law and daughters property. Lots of woods and land to clean up and maintain! Since I have turned off the news lately it's a nice calming show to watch! Keep going and some people are just going to be negative...can't change them! Thanks!!

I guess I am lost on this whole thing. I saw Mike do a nice thing for a friend. He had the equipment to do the job but most importantly, Mike was willing to spend the time. Well, where ever there are nice people there are azz wholes like Whiteman who cannot get over the fact nobody in the world likes/wants/or needs them, while appreciating and wanting to be around other good people. It is a shame they have been reduced to offering up their invective on you-tube but that threshold is low... You're a nice guy Mike.. more important you are a good friend to an ordinary guy - not some quasi celebrity wanna-be looking to stand on your shoulders to be noticed. You are too BIG A MAN to let the whimpering of a wannabe bother you.. Well done Mike... It is a lesson in simple charity many seem to have forgotten...or lost sight of.
