I started with a purple Poulan Wild thing 18" back around 2002 (before that axe and saws for firewood) and ran it more then 100 hours and got my money out of it for sure. BUT, once I bought a Husqvarna 365 and Stihl MS-180, I started to hate other saw brands. They just felt wrong afterwards and I couldn't stand the vibration anymore. The MS-180 C-BE is my favorite cheap saw, just something about it, that makes me like using it. Going by the website the 261 is 2x the HP for less then a pound more. That is the difference $ between home owner and pro. I have been seriously considering the 261 myself. The 85-92 cc saws can get a tad heavy in the hot Georgia sun with all my gear on. I am not in the same shape as 20 years ago. I have been trying the various 80v chainsaws. When they say more powerful then a 50cc saw. It must be the Poulan Pro because I kind of doubt it is equal to a MS-250 and I have had maybe three of those versions so I know them well. Never mind a Stihl 261 which is a real pro 50cc saw. Thank you, I liked watching the saw work, the videos are how I buy a saw now for the majority of the info. So, I know the good and bad ahead of the purchase. I was helping a guy with his sawmill because he had big slabs to cut. I found the bar on my 32" 660 no way fit the 880. Some beefy studs on the 880. So, I was testing the chains I sharpened, cutting free hand firewood off the mill, because they previously were so dull. I was okay on the Stihl 880 + 48" bar, but, once I put on that Cannon bar (56"?), I said no more free-hand. I am going to kill myself, the thing is a beast. Found out his problem with dull chains once I started to cut and the bar was super hot when it shouldn't be. Plus, I always had trouble starting the saw and had to have him help me by standing on it or holding the mill frame. He had broken the bar on the cam that drives the oil pump AND the little clutch housing bearing had come apart, melted, scattered, and squished itself and the plastic and metal pieces everywhere. What a mess. His dealer said they don't grease them or lube them at all ... My dealer said you are suppose to oil them. Just mentioning this in case you want to check yours. I figure I can't tell you anything about a chainsaw, but, thought you might enjoy the story anyway :-D

I bought an MS271 a handful of years ago and it was a great saw, but I always wished I had spent a little more and gotten a pro model. Earlier this year, I decided to do so, but was trying to decide between the 261 and 362. Finally pulled the trigger on the 362 and I am very happy with it. The biggest thing that swayed me is that it was the same weight as the 271, with a ton more power. The 261 would have been a weight savings. I’d love to grab a 261 some time down the road though.

I aggree with you that the 261 is a great all around saw, and it was my first saw I bought. I have installed dual dogs and swapped their bar for a sugi. Lately, I have been using my 660, 661, or 440/044, but I have been cutting up orange osage at 18 to 25 in diameter. It was alittle too much for my 261. I aggree with you on the weight, especially if running the larger bars! Honestly your video is making me want to go out to the garage and fire it up!

What happened to that 036 you used to have? That, to me is the best firewood saw you have. I had a 261 and to me it had no personality and I did not like it. My favorite firewood saw is my ms 360. It won’t quite stay with my ms 440 but it is old reliable. I do have a 20 inch Total laminated bar on it, so it is pretty handy and light. It is much more powerful than that 50 cc 261.

McCulloch Sp125 would eat that and its 125 cc and Paul Newman endorsed. I run McCulloch Pro Mac 800 and 850 with a few 110's. Stihl has a much larger saw the 090 which is my dream saw but without McCulloch Innovations Stihl would not have Trigger throttle lock handle, auto comp carb, auto oiler, rubber engine mounts etc.

I have used many different saws through the years I like the MS181C 16" and the MS251C 18" for Firewood both are Easy Start and Quick Release Chain covers. I use the Stihl 2 in 1 Sharpener every tank of fuel. One or Two strokes on each tooth sharpens the tooth and lowers the raker. I will put a MS181 with a 2 in 1 sharpened chain up against any saw. Not much of difference with a good sharp chain except the saw is alot lighter. I cut 15 cords in 3 days.

I had a 181 I used for my camping firewood saw and wanted to upgrade. The plan was to go with an MS250, which is the near the top for Stihl homeowner saws but that changed in a chance 20 minutes. I went to a friends cabin up in the interior of British Columbia that sits on 10 acres of treed property and each fall they go into a section and cut up the deadfall birch trees for the winters firewood and there’s some big 30+” diameter trees there. As luck would have it they were using an MS250 and let me try it out. I loved it but my friends family member says “hang on a minute” as he walked away and came back with an MS261 which he told me to try. It was night and day different, I couldn’t believe how good it was. The next week I had one.

If money was no object, I would have a 462 and a 261. The power to weight ratio of the 462 is amazing. The 261 is just the right size for 90% of home owner jobs. But, since I can't have both, I have gone with the 362. I do a lot of trail maintenance and the extra pound and a half adds up, but the better power to weight ratio makes it worth it. I tried to offset that with a light 20" bar and couldn't be happier.
Michael Max
Michael Max 3 ай мурун
I find that working not as long with a bigger saw wears me out less that working longer with a smaller saw. Same goes for bar length. I rather bend over less using a longer bar for bucking and the shortest bar I use is a 25" ... saves my back. My go to is the 661 with a 25" bar for felling and a 36" for bucking. I only have oak and hickory on my property though
OBX Koastie

Mike...Stihl doesn't make one and that is a shame but if you want your saw to really come to life, and I don't mean getting a port job, get an Oregon narrow kerf Speedcut (TXLG not TXLB) bar and some Husky narrow kerf SP33G chain. You will find with that combination your MS261 will almost keep up with your old O36 Pro/MS362 in the smaller wood as it loads the saw less and keeps the RPMs up! Keep the content interesting!

I agree with you, and it’s the best money I ever spent to buy a stihl. I went through so many cheap chainsaws it was a joke, a couple electric and two or three gas and every time it was the same thing, after a while it just got impossible to start and once it would get hot it would die end it got impossible to tune. My neighbor but an MS 280 and both of us use that for about a year and a half and it was perfect started every time ran and ran restarted easily, there were no drawbacks. When he moved I went out and bought an MS 250 and have had it for a few years now and I think I’ve only replaced a chain and a spark plug spark plug. They just start every time and work amazingly well.

Got the run around from the local dealer, so I tossed it in the dumpster and bought a 3120 Jungle. Been running it for 4+ years now without a hiccup. That whole ordeal put a bad taste in my mouth about Stihl. I know everyone’s experience is different, but I don’t like buying “the best” for all the $’s and getting hosed.

I had a 266 and 281, very nice saws. What I like the most is stupid stuff does not break and the drum system has it's pluses. Yes, the help will break the newer and cheaper caps on the newer saws. I ended up selling them 266/281 and buying a 385. Reason? I can change my chain 2-3 time an hour when using it on the sawmill. So, after 8 chain changes in a day, you appreciate side adjusters. Though it comes with the caveat of a cheaper brake band system . The side adjuster is nice. It was one reason I sold my 3120, no sude adjuster and at the time, I no longer had my chainsaw sawmill One thing I appreciate on the 266/281/365/372/385 saws I have owned is the air filter system. When using on a sawmill it makes a big positive difference.
