Two additional lessons learned watching this video. Watching you pick up dimes with that grapple thumb I should probable might outta burn my man card. Additionally I wont be renting equipment anytime soon I'd probably have that thing jerking and bouncing all over the place. I just found your channel and the videos have been enjoyable. Thank you and God bless.

I rented a mini-ex for a week and I ended up needing it for 8 days because I got rained out one day. When I was done, I pulled the mini onto the concrete and hosed it down really well. They commented on how they hadn't seen it that clean in a long time. Strangely, they "forgot" to charge me for the 8th day...

Where does one get the required training as a precondition of renting heavy equipment? I have my own TLB - tractor-loader- backhoe, but I taught myself how to use it. What certifications would a DIY’er need to have to rent equip. like your excavator?

To bad a top of one wasn't available for a Christmas tree. But I've seen it before - small trees are planted next to themselves or the house and then they grow up into mature trees in 20 years or so and are to large for the spot anymore. Smothering the house or view or always in the traffic lanes. Take care. Love to both of you.

Not sure about that scary music at the beginning. I was afraid walkers were going to crawl out of your excavation site. And Melissa, here in northwest Ohio, we call that farmer-ese. That little body of water runnin past the house is pronounced “crick”, not like it’s spelled (creek with a long e sound); and that thing on top of your house spelled “r o o f” is pronounced with the vowel sound as in the word “cook”, not like in the word “blue”. But if ya hafta splain it, folks jist don’t git it!

First off, you have four children and are still together, I think most people can find the affection in your relationship! Building relationships with the people you deal with on a regular basis is paramount to success. Treat everyone and everything as if it was your family and many of the stresses of life will disapate.

Mike & Melissa - Great video. I agree with John Medlin - Melissa you have some great quotes in this one. "I know you do a lot of it" (renting equipment), and "The subscribers know who spends a lot of money." Mike, in your defense, everything you said is true, and also makes sense. I also need to commend you on your management of the controls in removing the fence post. I wondered if you were going to use the excavator, but when I watched you gently catch the loop on the strap to begin the lift - what can I say other than once again Nicely Done sir! Blessings to you both, and to the family. Hi to Hunter, Hannah, and Eva. By the way Eva, nice job on idling that jeep up and over the rise down by the wood pile.

That little black book that girls kept in high school is only one of many kept in life. For some people, who truly disrespect equipment, their name is passed on like a plague that hit some country town like the potato famine or anthrax as every store owner now knows the name, address and their kids names as well as the address and other things happen. It also happens in a good way as you big something back in way better condition than when you left with it. Equipment looks easy but if not skilled, it doesn't hurt to ask for a tutor on that machine as we are not born smart. just cause you walked a dozer out of the road or something, a operator it does not make one. Even people who haven't run something before should still know how to use a shovel to clean the tracks and hose it off. Not sure how to fuel, then tell them show me or pay them as someone is to do it or it only runs once. Common sense will only carry you so far so it it gets hot, don't go dumping cold water in it. Stuff some people never knew and you assume they do. I have a male nurse who comes in and dresses my wounds two or more times a week and he doesn't know a spark plug from a crescent wrench. So I taught him how to ride a four wheeler before I let his young daughters ride mine. My peronal care got way better if possible as he is so very kind. His background in the navy and other adventures has been in hospital and other stuff related. Now teach his whole family to play music.

Evergreen Trees do not sink their roots deep into the ground. They are different compared to the Hardwood trees that send roots deeper into the ground. An Evergreen will tip over in a strong wind easier than a deep rooted tree.

Thanks for the informative video on machine renting since I am considering renting a piece of equipment for one of my projects. One topic you didn't cover was fuel. How do you handle that? Mike Stan sent m.j e a message he borrowed the same kabota your using and he broke it getting our tree stumps out, so the implant company back out and pucked it up shaking their heads, so stan went to Cat and bought the 349F Trackhoe, Stan said it only cost him 4 horses and change, I guess thats not to bad, we sell our Paints for around 40,000 each or more depending on the horse, but Stan said its great plenty of power to do what needs to be done on the Ranch 475 horses can dig down 26 feet had the thumb installed came with three different buckets with it as long as hes happy, I dont know why he doesn't use the D12 Cat or the AW900 with 100 yard bucket, to each his own I guess

Mike thanks really good info! What happens if you have downtime on a machine. Like say something mechanical happens to it like a hose breaks or whatever. Do they give you additional time or fix it same day? Wondering if it would be better to clear land with an excavator or just chopping trees and grinding stumps.
