#864 Little Sketchy? EXCAVATOR IN POND, What could Go Wrong? Kubota KX-080 Sediment Removal

  Көрүүлөр 95,513

Outdoors With The Morgans

2 ай мурун

This evening I took the Kubota KX-080 Excavator Down in the back end of the pond to start removing some sediment that had washed in from a flash flood. It was a little sketchy getting in there and had to be careful not to sink out of site.

Why Did You Not place the old logs in front of the Excavator to make a solid pad for the Tracks. Looks like you would have been less likely to sink down. As you cleared the sediment from the front then back up and pull the logs until you have it cleaned up. Just a thought.

long way before sinking, look letsdig18 videos. he is doing this a lot without mats, sure he uses mats but its when there is 6 feet of mud. I understand you dont want that machine stuck but still, dont stress out! :) the work you did is better than nothing after all.

Nah Mike, that's not sketchy at all. You could have gotten in there a lot more with that machine without the mats. But you'd still be cleaning the mud out from the tracks for a while. LOL! 😁

You really should....... nah, just do what you do Mike. The day you come do something for me I’ll tell ya what/how to do. Only then. 😉
mdbailey57 2 ай мурун
You could stack those logs together as a make shift mat to park the track on to spread out the weight a little. I guess that is the downside of a machine that big, you get it stuck, and it is a big deal. Where you are you should be able to handle anything to pull itself out as long as it stays level though.

Hopefully this doesn't come off as a "You Should Moment", but you have access to enough logs to make yourself a cordaroy road/pad. We used to do that at a camp I once worked at, built a road right through a swamp. It will make a solid pad for you to work on...then if you want you can remove the logs as you back out (much like your swamp mat).

Hey Mike. Did you ever have your pound sealed? Here in Oklahoma there used to be sold man that had about 25 full grown hogs that rented his hogs out after someone built a pond he took his hogs and turned them loose into the pond. They say that the oil in hogs body would seal a pond so it would not leak. Take care mike.
Hi Mike, we are entering into the winter season with some very cold days and early mornings - nothing compared to your climate extremes - however cold enough for us on the east coast of NSW Australia. That kind of ground that you're working on there is delicate process the more you disturb it and the longer your there the worse it gets. I dont know what you plan to make the sed trap out of but a mix of large and small rocks to make a wall and some logs will do the trick and dig it deeper behind it so can trap more sed so have more time in between cleanouts

I have a property that I need to cut a driveway on. I think I need an excavator about the size of the one you are using. My feeling is that you are making some of the operation look easier than I think it may be for someone like me. My first job was on a farm, I worked through college landscaping, so I have run some machines. Tractors and loaders I have used a lot. I have not used a backhoe or excavator. I am on the fence about renting a machine or hiring a professional to do the work. I do love the feeling of accomplishment when I look at the land and know that I did it. You have made my decision harder.

A month or two ago I watch a guy with a huge excavator on a swamp. All he did was take some timber platforms and drove on them and when he needed to go further he picks up the platform and put it in front of him. He was all over the swamp that way. You have lots of old trees to drive on. :)

@Kim Carter: Those logs were pretty rotten by the look of them, but he had a chainsaw with him and could have cut some new ones to ride on. Why the change of mind regarding the small dam, not such a good idea. Like your videos except for the music, would sooner just hear the machine sounds.

My thought on the “you should” crowd is that everybody is a damned expert. THEY should get out and do something on their own rather than second guessing everything everybody else does. It’s like the worst kind of manager... come in after the fact, pick everything apart, and say “I never would have done that...” Just do whatever the hell you want. People are here watching you for a reason. We all wish we could be doing the same thing.

Best of luck and thank you.
