Aaaaagh inches and feet are soooo stupid the beat up old sight level is soooo stupid .No offence. Americans use metric and a G.D. laser level, oh and get rid of that arsehole Trump. Ye put men on the moon but drive me crazy.

I must say after using a water level to reset my manufactured home to level I became a fan.. a 2 gallon bucket with a 1/4" fitting threaded in the bottom and 100ft of tygon tube, fill with water and food colouring. The thing is deadly accurate, dirt cheap, albeit not as convenient as the sight level.

You need to show the bubble in the site level so people can actually see how you are determining each position, whether a cut or a fill. Without knowing about the bubble, people will miss the object lesson.

Channel Notification: #metoo As of about 1 month ago, I get NO notifications to channels I'm subbed to. First time this has ever happened. Have looked high and low for a solution. Nothing works. My only guess... it's an election year, and it's all-out war. They know what you had for breakfast, what you brushed your teeth with this morning and the size of your underwear. If you have posted anything (or COMMENTED anything) "they" don't agree with... you get your switch "flipped." Remember "MySpace?" Ya, me neither. Go over to Bitchute and start diversifying your online presence. Just a matter of time before Tube disagrees with your point of view.

Always make sure to two peg your eye level, its easy to do. Actually all levels should be checked for accuracy once or twice a season. Kuker ranken rules. I have two kukers, one was orange the other black. I emery clothed the paint off the orange one. Now it is a beautiful brass.

From the title and the thumbnail, everyone is thinking..."yep having a smoking hot blonde shooting grade for you would be a great thing to have. And after you watch the vid, you get to see that they are tricky! But a good sight gauge level can't be beat, unless of course you have a high dollar laser level in the bed of your ranger!
Kenneth Schlatmann
Kenneth Schlatmann 2 ай мурун
Neat way to establish quick cut & fill. I would suggest attaching a second folding tape to the post with 7" at the FG mark. Then you can use the sight level on the first tape without having to bend over. Say if you hold the level consistently at 60" and read 56" on the mark you need 4" of fill. Read 65" and a 5" cut. It will definitely save the back from not having to bend over.

Mike, I recently had an opportunity to find grade for a project. Using a play on your system and a tip I got from another KGpostr, I simply marked a 6 foot 1 x 3 with my final grade as the zero measure and then marked off in 1/4" increments up above and below the zero mark. Then using either a dot laser or even better a rotating laser set at grade height by placing the 1 x 3 at any point, the laser would instantly indicate how much that location was in relation to final grade. EG, if the laser pointed 2' above the zero mark then that spot was too low by that much and conversely anything below would indicate how high that spot was. It was a lot easier and quicker just to move the 1 x 3 around and get an instant reading. BTW, I just used a cheap harbor freight dot level laser as I could not justify buying a rotating laser that could be seen in bright light. Looking forward to seeing your build.

I got one . Had it for 30 yrs. I take it when I go preview jobs to get a rough estimate without having to set up a laser. I may use it occasionally to step down and see where the grade is real fast.

Nice work! Maybe I missed it, but what is your plan with your borrow-pit area? That looks close to your firewood splitting area & sawmill pad. I'm guessing that you have a plan to fill it with another material? It just did not look like a great place to have pit left open. Was that where the material is easily gotten?

Hey Mike & Melissa, love the channel. Quick question for you, wouldn't you want the floor above grade a few inches to keep water out? Does your grade slope away from the pad all around the site? 35 years ago I started with a site level and then after a couple years I moved to a transit. And then came laser levels and I purchased a very expensive laser that only did level. Quite a few years later you can buy a laser level that does slope and I had to have one but luckily the price had dropped to make them more affordable. Now 35 years late I use my eye.

Great video! Very simple explanation. Setting grade intimidates some people. As a surveyor it is one of my favorite jobs. I love watching it come together. There are only a few contractors in our area that are using the machine control so I still see a few of the old school operators hop out with their hand level and use my cut stakes to figure their grade (i.e. 2:1, 3:1 etc.) They get out measure from my stake and drop a rock and then sight to one of my grade lines and figure how much more to dig. Awesome video!

We set grade for an above ground swimming pool back in the early 90's. The yard had a slight downhill slope, so I used a string line and a level to cut the slope out so the pool would sit level. We cut it out using shovels and a pick, took a week to get it right but the pool lasted 24 years.

I've used a string with a line level out to 40 ft before leveling the string at waist height and measuring grade with a tape measure down from the string. .. Like you said about the glass you had, it ain't laser level but it's really close to getting one's grade where they want it. 👍
