All of those are beautiful. Its not classified as a hardwood but i think juniper is just as pretty as any. Just depends on the colors youre wanting and the use. I should have some juniper cut on my mill this fall or next spring if anybodys curious. Lots of reds purples and blonds in it.

I purchased 8/4 X 7" to 8"rough cut walnut for our cabinets, s4s'd it then split it on the big bandsaw. Edge glued it back together in bookmatched pattern for the panels. Wish I could link a photo. The grain patterns are beautiful. Yes it's the prettiest North American hardwood, though cherry is nice too. You Easterners are lucky with Cherry as it came up as weed trees after much of the old growth Oak and Hickory had been harvested 150 years ago. The Cherry turned out to be a very nice furniture wood, prettier than Oak or Hickory.

Thick sap wood rings generally means it grew faster than normal, probably came from a yard that gets fertilized . Also that stump will most likely be processed into gun stocks, stumps produce knurl in the wood grain . Enjoy your videos, God Bless.

Mike, you'd be amazed at how much of that sap wood will turn just as dark as the inner Walnut. Just wait it out! I milled a Walnut on my property about the same size, and was disappointed with all the sap wood..but it all turned dark! I have a beautiful 16/4 fireplace mantle now. 🙂

I can't wait to see what you make out of it! Long bars in homes don't seem to be as popular as in former times, but we have a long (10 feet) wooden breakfast bar table in our home. It is slightly (4 inches) below the granite island that it runs along so if you have your laptop on the upper granite and you spill the milk you are pouring on your cereal below you don't take out your computer! We love this shelf/table. It is a place to eat, study, work on projects, or just hang out. The lighter sapwood on your planks makes a beautiful contrast to the darker grain. Would be great if what you make from it could be something you would enjoy every day. Thanks for your great videos Mike!

At this point in time, I think if I had a choice I would mill out the wood that you have on your property & make something for your new building out of each species. Maybe ask each one of your children what wood they like, & then make something for them???? Just a thought!

A short story about a certain very high end hotel that foreign diplomats and extremely rich people have stayed at. The contracted the company I was working for to replace their old crown moldings , these are massive crowns. Every single piece was made from African mahogany, beautiful stuff that I was so proud of making. After it was installed they painted it all white , it just broke my heart

Hard Maple is hard to beat IMO. Mostly because of the soft grain beauty of it but also because over its lifetime the tree produces sap that can be made into Maple Syrup. NOTHING better than real Maple Syrup on Pancakes, French Toast, Waffles, Vanilla Ice, etc.

When you mentioned people doing things with stumps I thought, well there's another thing Mike knows something I had no clue about. It's great to see you let someone else have the opportunity to make something out of what others would just burn, looking forward to seeing the results. God bless the Morgans . I am too old to have a opinion that would relate to todays taste buds. As a young man though thinkinking must of been different then... I built a kitchen including cabinets, flooring and open wall. I used curly maple for the cutting boards. I even put in the now old fashioned potatoes, flour, and sugar plus onions bins where they tip forward just a bit, then you lift up and came out to the desired stop by where you set the bottom at and they stayed. The living room was mahogany, and my bar was all Walnut including the counter for serving over except the insert for the stainless steel poured drinks spot (I haven't drank for twenty four years now and its a mouth full.) Bedrooms were pine and red cedar including walk in closets. My oldest at the time and big help as a young teenager can be (my right arm) wanted his own and he got it by making trades and got the wood, It had been sawed into lumber a good thirty years before. I didn't have unlimited but we made do with three quarter inch "Teak" that had be designated for the cabin on a boat. I had realtors come over and take pictures of the house for ever and when I gave the house to mom and dad, she wanted that kitchen gone... she tried to get dad and he put his foot down and said no! She was persistent and got some carpenters from out of town to come make a appraisal... They looked at her and said "Lady, are you out of your 'friking mind' " so it stayed and then homes and gardens came and she changed her tune to "I told my son to build it this way" ..... go figure, anyway, built in nineteen seventy six, and still there and lived through a small fire. Insurance on that place is out of the world now.
