I found your excavator work interesting. I ran several from 1975 to 1985 including a Bantam C-451, John Deere 690B and a CAT 215 LC. I also helped dig out a pond that was full of silt from the Illinois farm fields. It amazes me how quiet todays excavators are.

Something for you to try before you give up that lovely machine. Muster up 2 good saw operators, get a bunch of logs for firewood stockpiled, than use the machine to grab and hold the logs at a comfortable height for the dudes on the saws, so they don't have to bend over as much when bucking them up. Saw up to the bucket, drop it, and grab another log. When your done, grab your "drops" by the end and cut them up. When you get it right, its stupid fast!! As always, Excellent video, keep up the good work!!

This was perfect - exactly what I hoped for. I’ve watched lots of videos that show the joystick function and then just show out the window while working. Thanks for taking the time to film and edit the picture in picture. It really helped showing the compound movements with both joysticks. Perfect timing too. I have a mini reserved for the weekend after next to get some work done. Will be my first time running one. 🙂

Hi Mike I had the opportunity to try out a small excavator for the first time. I had a 10 inch field tile that broke on me in my front yard. It went under the road and then into my front yard and went down to a 20 inch. I needed to fix about 12 feet and everyone that did that kind of work in my area was busy, so I rented a small excavator and was shown how to use it. By watching you I got the hang of it real fast. Boy was it fun. I wish I had more to do.

Hi MIke; this was a great video. Thanks for taking the time to give us an inside look at what you do to make these machines perform so meticulously, which is clearly demonstrated by the scrutiny allowed when the camera is on high speed. It must have amazed Melissa when you first met & over your years together to watch you acquire & deploy these skills.

I have to think if a person is hood at video games that have joy sticks they would probably pick running one of those toys pretty quick. I'm not at all I to video games so I would probably have that machine upside down and down the hole I was digging.🤣😅😆😆 But I enjoyed your knowledge of running it .you r ruly do have a nack for running machinery . I have a brother in law that ran the big excavators for a construction company in Pennsylvania. Hes now a supervisor teaching younger guys to run them.but he got in to some really nerve racking situations with them before but we all think he's 90% crazy so those situations didn't affect him much. Right now there probably not far from yall north of pittsburg putting in pipe lines. He and there crew have been there for over a yr now. I wish i had the opportunity to learn that trade when I was young.i wouldn't be all messed up physically like I am if I sat in one of those toys for the same 40 yrs that I beat myself to death in furniture manufacturing. I bet yall get that thing all shined back up again for its return to the rental shop. Thanks that was fun to watch.

Mike, I have 35 timbered acres here in Idaho, would you recommend a excavator over the mx5400 for overall management of roads and timber?
Ben C
Ben C Ай мурун
Rimrock300, thanks for the input. I’m out in the central Idaho mountains with fairly steep terrain. I’ll be making roads, piling slash and maintaining/establishing drainage for the road system. This will eventually be my first tractor purchase so I want to be wise with the investment. Thanks again!
Rimrock300 Ай мурун
Not that I am Mike) but just my opinion; A tractor with a front loader and a winch will be the most important equimpment to handle the timber and maintain roads I would say. If one got relative 'gentle' terrain like Mike got, not too rocky and some flat fine ground many places (compared to what I am used to) one would likely get a long way making roads in the first place with something like the MX5400. With more steep and rocky terrain a excavator will be more handy and quicker. One can rent one to make the main roads, or get a used one. would not put too much money into a excavator for 35 acres of timber, but they are sure handy to have around at a property. Would go for a Japanese brand myself)

Drive motors are (ideally) ALWAYS at the back....it will work the other way too.....but its techically incorrect.

Backwards around puts the stress and jarring directly on the drive motors and reduces their lifespan (which you may be fine with) - even if it works better for you. IMHO

Hello Mike and Melissa, real good explanations Mike. My son owned a Kubota dig machine 040 and explained to me the both ajustements but I usually take thé grapple with the trailer for the logs and this loader operate like a backhoe, so I continue to use the trailers and the Kubota tractor or the IH for carrying wood logs and it's like a day off for me. I'm watching All your vids everytime they appear and thanks à lot for all what you do. A french speaking guy living in the south of Quebec city near Maine border. Bruce Alvarez

So if you can run a backhoe you are almost halfway to being able to run an excavator. I expect it takes some time to get used to the front not necessarily being where you are facing between the tracks. Maybe Kubota would add that machine to your "package agreement" :D

Mike I was always told to dig over the idler's in case you drug something into the cab and it hit your travel sticks it would walk away from the object. I knew of a guy that was working on a pipe laying job (steel gas pipe) and he walked the hoe over the ditch to clean out the ditch after a weekend rain. The pipe was propped up and he drug himself into the pipe, it came into the cab and hit the sticks (he was over the drive"s) and walked the machine toward the pipe and shoved him out the back of the cab through the glass. He was hurt pretty bad.
