Skid steers come in really handy. My son talked about getting one for several years and finally bought a GN 22+5 trailer so then he had to buy one. It gets used a lot when my wife's JD tractor is to small.

I have always used straw after seeding unless you want to hydro-seed. Like you said Mike, it's erosion control to a certain degree but it also helps retain moisture, but helps keeps the birds away from eating the seed. Only other thing I used once is a bale chopper. They work good but are for bigger areas. You know, it goes everywhere! Great video

Hey Morgans, don't you have a box scraper of sorts? after you move most of the dirt won't the box scraper/ leveler do a better job?just wondering. And yes I use straw. Buy it from a local farmer and it is always cheaper than buying it at a store. works great.

It's now Wednesday and it's 58*, feels like 58* and "humisery" is 78%. Needless to say, our furnace has run today. Rained all day yesterday and more coming our way. I'd rather have snow. Looks like maybe we will get a good winter this year? lol I have a mini Stanley knife and also carry a box cutter. I used these when I worked retail for almost 19 years. I feel naked without them so I keep one in my purse and one on my bedside table.

We use the staw here in TX for the same reasons. Just have to be careful where you get it, because all the weeds from the straw grow up in the lawn, then you fight them as well. Pre- emergent use a lot.

Mike, those bales of straw are called 'small squares.' That is the original size bales that farmers made for years before 21st century equipment allowed them to make 600-1,000 pound bales that are moved with equipment.

Mike & Melissa - Being a city kid now, I don't do a lot of seeding. But what you said Mike certainly makes sense for all of the reasons you gave. Sounds like fall is coming there already. We are still pretty much in a summer mode here in eastern Iowa. Blessings to you both. Love watching the two of you working together. Nice tour of the hundred acre wood on the way back with the skid loader.

We use straw blankets 8 feet wide 112 feet long about $30 we just seed over flat dirt compactor dirt loose dirt doesn’t really matter the seat the straw bed as a perfect seedbed underneath it just grows don’t have to tell homeowner anything they don’t have to even water it It is what they use along the highway on slopes and It never gets water there either it just works every now and then on a really bad slow we have a problem but it’s rare how we just leave the Straw blanket down and see it over the top We are in Michigan around Ann Arbor Dexter

With the ride thru the woods, I've thought of something. When you get your new building done what if you had an open house & take reservations for people to camp in your woods & have those people clean up the trails of all the down branches. Melissa could supervise the chipper. Mike could supervise the spitter. Hunter could hand out soda??? The girls could figure out the schedule for everyone. Could have a catering service do all the food, lunch & dinner???? Maybe it could happen on Memorial Day or July 4th???? Pray the virus will be in our past? Maybe you could have an entry fee for the event & donate to your favorite charity?????? Just a thought.

Hey, Mike! We have to use straw, or straw matting in rolls here in VA to get even germination of seed. Otherwise, between the birds and some breezes, and rain, you might have splotchy grass.... Anna 1, Anna 2... that's crazy!!! Love it!

The biggist thing the straw does is shade the grass sprouts in the first days of growth when the are most vonerable. The Direct sun can dehydreate the young plant and scorch it's roots before they can really dig in and establish the new plant. BTW a fun video> Melissa looks wonderful as always.
