Building Contractors are almost done with their work on the Hobby Barn, Today we do a little grading with the Kubota BX 23S and MX 5400, then a walk around and talk about what heat source we decided to go with.

You Americans love your timber sheds which look great question what’s the warranty with the wood going rotten in and around your posts and lower sections when the concrete goes down every old footing or post I’ve dug out of the ground the timber is rotten??

We put a boiler in our barn our pipes are black iron 3 inch well caseings got them for a song we have them laying on top of 6x12 wood on the outter wall of the barn then through the middle then its on the otter walls 18 inches in the ground in the arena so its always warm in the arena the stalls are warm also, our boiler is oil fed, which is great so when we change oil of all the equipment we filter it them pump into tank which is 5,000 gallons but using the well pipe for running the water in is great hasnt had one leak in over 35 years yet oh by the way the barn is 110ft X 780 ft something k8nd of small we have been thinking about adding a wing in the middle for another 780 ft someday maybe

In-floor radiant heat in concrete is NOT efficient. It takes so much energy to heat the thermal mass (concrete floor) compared to other heating methods. You aren't saving any money doing it, but as long as you are ok with it, it's nice to have.

Definitely go with a gasification wood fired boiler which produces almost no smoke. Set it up with zones to heat the house, the multi-purpose building (2 zones), and the future swimming pool. It would be so awesome to be able to use the swimming pool year round. The whole system would pay for itself.

Nice Vid...As to the wood under the carport / porch......NO WAY! Not in Fl. We have these things called "Carpenter Bee's" They bore holes in the wood and then Crap all over the place....I had 6- 1 X 6 X10 PT boards under my RV metal shelter....8ft florescent lights were attached to them.OMG those bees made a mess every year....I removed the wood and installed composite.....Problem solved....If I had YOUR setup....Cover it with metal. White....to keep it bright under there.

We built our retirement home in Northeastern Wisconsin and installed in floor heat in our finished basement and we love it. If I ever build another house, the entire building would have in floor heat. I would suggest, however, if your finished room has different uses; living area or play room or time in each area, I would suggest zoning the areas with their own thermostat, we have 3 zones and it works very well. Keep up the good work.

Mike- when you purchase your outdoor boiler to operate the radiant floor heat, keep in mind of future heating requirements. I’m in Delaware, the climate is a little warmer then yours but close to the same. I insulated my floor with 2” foam and installed a 125,000btu fan forced water A coil. Feed from a central boiler Cl6048. I’ve seen shop’s with floor heat take a few more cords of wood a year to operate. My boiler heats the shop 45x75, 4600 sq foot home and our swimming pool. Leave plenty of room for circulator pumps. I want to do a hot water heater but not enough room for a circulator pump. I’m on my 13th year and it’s the best heat ever. 4-5 cords a year is all I use, good luck.

You're right. I too would definitely take down the cherry tree. A multi-leader tree is always weak and a good candidate for falling in a storm. It also has condominate branches, which is another weak point. Think of it as the two leaders at the base compete with each other and it will not have a long life, esp should you experience a higher wind storm, which being near the top of an elevation (hill) makes that a higher probability. If it had a single straight leader that extended into the canopy, that would be a different story. But it doesn't, so I'd take it down too. Structure is looking good.

Mike n Melissa, Having a Day here in NE Cecil County on the Elk River, what a great time I have watching your channel. Very well put together! Editing, content, music, family....so many nice things here. 15 years ago when I built my timber framed house, I decided to go with radiant heat in the slab on the ground floor. Best decision I made! I know it is (and was) a large initial expense, but I went with a Geo Thermal heat pump system. Part of that great decision. My house has 20’ high ceilings, as well as the radiant floor heating. We keep the thermostat close to 72 all year round, whether it’s 90 or 20 out. No outside unit, quiet, efficient! Good luck and the “BARN” is awesome!

With all that wood I’d put in a boiler. Central Boiler probably makes the best, you can heat the barn, house and heat the water before it goes into the hot water tank. They make a big heater core, like in your car, that fits in a forced air furnace. A couple of years ago I researched all the different wood fired boilers and the Central Boiler was the most efficient boiler I found.

The name of the building has to be short and clear and your answer to the question "Where is ....?". My answer would be "the Station" as the primary reason for the building was to park under cover vehicles and equipment. The "Hobby Barn" sounds like a kids play area but this building may in future become more and more part of your serious livelihood.

I installed my own radiant in floor heat in a 36 x 50 ft addition to my 30 x 40 ft shop in northeastern Ohio about 4 years ago. I didn't have any really knowledgeable installers in my area that were willing to work with me . I'm still refining the controls and am adding thermal storage tanks. They will heat the building when the fire goes out before the backup heat kicks in. Use a backup boiler for after that. I added a radiator to the furnace in the original building. Three zones should be plenty. Game room, office/ bathroom, shop. Use crosslinked oxygen barrier PEX tubing. Radiant floor thermostats won't let the floor get below 50 degrees even if the thermostat is set for 45. Run 100 degree water through the floor and it won't have to get above 80. Any hotter and the heat swings will crack the concrete. I'm using a wood gasification boiler that is above 92% efficient when not idling. Outdoor boilers are no where near that efficient.Backup boiler should only heat the buffer tank, not the thermal storage tank. All heat zones are fed from the buffer tank. Check out the forum called The Boiler Room. Download Idronics publications from Calafie. They teach you everything about radiant heating. If you use a water heater for the buffer tank, it' also serves as a backup boiler.

Mike you panicked me. I don't remember which video it was, but you were talking about how posts in the ground were going to rot and everything collapse. I have a pole barn built in the 40's or 50's with those same post in the ground construction. 2 o'clock in the morning I was running down to the barn in my pajamas. I thought the whole thing was going to collapse and wanted to get the tractor and equipment out. I checked the posts and phew the were fine. I dodged a bullet there. I did learn one lesson though. Dude, I have a shop with in-floor heating, I NEVER USE IT. The only way that type of heat is efficient is if you heat it up in the fall and don't shut it off till late spring. If you plan on being in the building full time it is worth it; if it is only a "hobby" place then go with heating the air only when you need it. Propane or nat gas fired infrared heating. And there is nothing instant with in-floor heating, takes a day of continuous running to heat up that slab.

I couldn't agree more, to have more than one zone. I would also recommend that you lay out the floor in zones in case you wanted to separate the larger areas later. I also agree with an overhead unit heater. I can't stress this enough, split the areas and lay out the tubing accordingly. I would also recommend keeping the tubing at least 18"from the exterior wall. Long time watcher, first time comment.
