Mike - Great video of the hundred acre wood. And Hannah you had some really great shots too. I don't know how it was back there, but here in Iowa it almost seemed like the trees turned within about a three day period. Blessings to you and the family. Hi to Melissa, Hunter, and Eva.

Hello, do you pile up your leaves in a shaded area? If you don't, maybe look at the benefits of the leaves breaking down for garden amendments or mulch to suppress weeds. Earth worms loves the leaves.

Our road is called Oak Park and believe me, there's a good reason for it. In the front yard, we have one oak next to the driveway and in front of the living room windows we have a double trunk oak. These are about 75-100' tall. Then we have 2 more oaks in the back yard that are also about 75-100' tall. We do most of the leaf clean up with the push mower but this year we are going to go get dad's riding mower to clean them up. We've got a lot of acorns too and that usually means an early and long winter. Squirrels are hoarding them so that's another sign. I loved doing them but with health issues preventing it now, my husband does it. I also loved shoveling snow but for the same reason, hubby now does the snow removal but we got him a snow blower. I can't wait for snow. I follow a couple who just moved to northern Idaho (Good Simple Living channel on KGpost) and they were getting some snow already a few days ago. We get a LOT of lake effect snow where we are in Michigan as we live about 8 miles inland from Lake Michigan.

I have a question about the driveway/road around the new building. You said you are going to change the existing road to go around the new building to get to the saw mill area? The way you are setting things up you are going to drive past the building coming in your driveway then turn around and go back around the building? Why don't you connect the corner of the road around the building with the driveway? (At about the 12:20 mark is the corner I'm talking about.) That would give you easy access to go around the building to get to the back area when you pull in from the road. Love the new building! And the pics are awesome!

Watching the video in the beginning with the fall colored trees; fire smoking in the fire pit; You driving through the trails, cutting fallen branches is somewhat like re-living the magic of "The Waltons;" reminding all of us in these chaotic times of simple Family values. "Goodnight Elizabeth; Good night Jim Bob...."
Hungarian 16 күн мурун
20:25 Couple thoughts on your drainage. Did you consider simply digging one trench right along the side of the building and picking up both down spouts? Might have been simpler and better since you would not have (2) 90's underground that can help to clog the line with leaves and stuff. Also, did you consider doing a rock river instead installed slightly below grade? You could meander that bull rock river all the way down to the culvert. I just think those rock rivers are a nice landscaping feature. Not criticizing what you are doing, just asking.
Hungarian 15 күн мурун
Never mind my comment about digging up close the the side of the building. I wasn't thinking about the fact that you would be digging up against the posts which could turn into a disaster. But what about the rock river idea?
Jason Bossaer
Jason Bossaer 16 күн мурун
Your drainage plan looks like a winner to me. I did something very similar on our barn. For some reason, birds started building nests in the gutters though and plugged up the downspouts. I’m currently dealing with that issue. Always something, isn’t it? Take care, Jason from Indiana.

When I built my house 29 years ago I didn't use flexible corrugated pipe for my footer drains, its all glued and fitted with 3 clean outs and I tied the down spouts into it. I know I will catch hell, but I built an earth contact home that is right at a hundred feet long and thirty feet wide with a 10/12 roof. That is more water than some people may imagine. after all the waterproofing and before back filling I laid in 3/4 clean rock about 4' deep. I have 3 outlets about 300 feet out in front of my house and when we get a lot of rain it looks like a water main broke in my yard! I was nervous about an earth contact so I went the extra mile with everything to do foundation and moving water away. Still dry as a bone...

Great video, Mike! It is 90 degrees here on the Central California Coast today. We could really use the cooler weather and rain. We don't get those fall colors out here. I agree with a couple of the other comments. You should increase the size of your pipe to 6" beyond the Y. The maximum recommended flow rate for 4" PVC drainage pipe is 75 GPM. Based on the size of your roof, you could be getting up to 100 GPM during a peak rainstorm in PA. A portion of that will be going into your rain collection system, so you may be getting close to the recommended limit.
TBone MC
TBone MC 16 күн мурун
You have the opportunity now to collect a huge amount of rainwater off of your new roof and connect your house and barn to it. I would get some adapters to take your 4" pvc straight from the gutter outlets replacing the current downpipes so you can pressurize the entire system so that the pvs can come up right next to some water tanks to fill them. The tank or tanks don't need to be right next to the barn and so long as the tank bases were approximately the same level as your new slab for the barn and the inlets to the tanks are a couple of feet lower than the gutters then it would work well. I think I would run two separate 4" pvc lines, one from each end of the barn so you end up with 2 pvc risers into the tanks. You could set up a pressure pump for the tanks right up against a wall of the barn or even inside so it isn't in the weather and it's handy for power. It's hard to tell from a video but I think I'd put the tanks close to your property boundary on the opposite side of the barn to your house. It makes for a very neat and tidy system. Because the pvc would always be full of water up to the top of the tank risers if you put in inspection openings with rubber ring screwed caps in each line close to the tanks at the lines lowest level you would then only have to unscrew the caps to flush and empty the lines. All of our tanks have a fly wire strainer in their inlets which do a great job of stopping leaves etc getting into the tank.

I assume you are putting on gutter leaf guards - I always thought they would not work, but they do (mine are flat aluminum with small, round perforated holes - no problems in 12 years with a large roof - but everyone has their favorite style). While the ditch is open, ues a 4" PVC pipe for each downspout, or combine 2 into a 6" PVC pipe - I know from experience....
